Multiple Teams · Devils win at buzzer

Richmond had struggled all night to make big shots on Saturday at Winchester.

But the last Red Devil 3-point attempt will be celebrated for a long time. Senior Trey Griffin connected on a 23-foot shot as the buzzer sounded to lift Richmond to a 44-41 win against the host Golden Falcons at the Winchester Fieldhouse.

Griffin’s theatrics completed a 17-point rally for the Red Devils, who shook off a one-point loss at Harrison on Friday. The play came after Richmond had burned most of the clock in the final minute. Head coach Rick Wedlow drew up a play for his senior shooting guard, who knocked down the shot and then celebrated with his teammates in front of a stunned Winchester crowd.

Griffin finished with eight points, six coming in the fourth quarter as Richmond outscored Winchester 20-8 to steal the low-scoring win.

Richmond trailed 33-16 midway through the fourth quarter, before ratcheting up the defensive pressure and ultimately taking a short-lived lead late in the fourth. But Winchester came back to tie the game and set up Griffin’s heroic heave.

Junior Christian Harvey paced the Red Devils with 18 points, while freshman Rickie Wedlow chipped in eight points. Fellow freshman Koream Jett added a key 3-pointer and came up with the assist on Griffin’s game winner.

Richmond’s junior varsity also came up with a three-point win, battling back from a six-point halftime deficit to claim a 54-51 win. Jett had 11 points in just three quarters to lead the Devils, while Brandon Ervin came off the bench to chip in 10 points in the win.

The Red Devils return to action on Thursday when they play host to NCC rival Anderson. The junior varsity game is set to tip at 6 p.m. at Tiernan Center.
