The weather was perfect and the greens were hard with 12 teams coming to battle for a sectional title at Forest Hills CC Golf Course for the right to survive and advance in the state tournament. The Richmond Boys Varsity Golf Team withstood the test and fired a 325 to beat the field and advance to the Regional as Sectional Champions. Hagerstown captured 2nd place and advanced as well, but Centerville came to play and surprised the field, succeeding in advancing to the Regional with a 3rd place finish. The top 3 individual scores that also qualified for the Regional were Cole Carmony from Rushville with an 84, Dalton Lee from Connersville with an 87, and Konner Fabrick with an 87 from Tri High.
“We had always said that one of our goals was to win Sectional and we were maybe a little too pumped up because we won our RHS Invitational last Thursday. We came out and made some early mistakes but like we have always said “cream rises to the top.” We put an emphasis on course management and maintaining control of the things we can control and the bubbas responded as a team to pick up some struggling players which allowed us to win. This being my last sectional coaching at Richmond, it feels good to win. My thanks to the boys,” stated Coach Ron Murphy.
Senior Jarrett Focht finished in 2nd place individually shooting a 78 stated, “I really turned it around on 14 after I made a 5 after hitting my ball OB (Out of bounds). I was just really motivated to win after that point.”
Senior Noah Reisner jokingly added, “I shot an 83 which helped the team win, but I know Coach Murphy would’ve shot an 82. Just happy to get the win for the ol’ Coach.”
Senior Jackson Hillard stated, “I just played golf today shooting a 93, and I wasn’t too spectacular or too bad, but the coaches said after the match that I played team ball today even though I was on the struggle bus.”
Sophomore Jake Miller was medalist with a 1 under score of 71 challenged the team saying, “I’d like to qualify for state personally, but I want us to qualify for state as a team. I don’t want to go out there alone, I want the team to go. We’re going to celebrate with a round at Beaver Meadows tomorrow and get ready for the Regional.”
Andrew Click, the lone Freshman on the team added, “I struggled today. I’ve got about 31 things I need to work on before Regional, but I’m excited we’re going as a team. I feel confident I’m going to figure this out.”
Assistant Coach Matt Haynes finished out the interviews by adding, “We can do this (finish in the top 3 at Regional). We can do this is we come mentally prepared and believe we can do this. All it takes is one round where we put it all together as a team and each shoot our personal best. It can be done. It feels really good winning another sectional title, which makes 4 sectional titles in 4 years for me in 2 sports. It feels good because we’re winners, we do things the right way, and it validates the work the coaches, players, and parents have put in to make this another successful season.”
The Regional will be held at the Players Club in Muncie, IN on Thursday, June 8th. Tee-off times will start at 8am.
