With the 2017-18 athletic season set to begin at the end of this month, here’s a look back at the top ten stories of the year from Richmond High School athletics from 2016-17. The Red Devils enjoyed a great deal of success in many sports, but a few teams and individuals merited a bit more distinction. Here’s the No. 8 story of the year for the Red Devils: Red Devils Rack up Regional Appearances
A solid and young core of Red Devil athletes made quite an impression at last spring’s Connersville track sectional.
Overall, Richmond finished second as a team, but there were highlight performances that left coach Ken Hittson remarking on the possibilities of similar success in future years.
“A lot of younger girls playing bigger roles…so I think Richmond track is going to be on the positive the next several years,” he told the Richmond Pal-Item.
Perhaps no athlete has an exciting future as Nakala Bennett, who won the 100, 200 and 400 as a freshman. Bennett also teamed with Payton VanMiddlesworth, Jada Hunter, and Riley Wetzel to finish second in the 4×400 relay.
Richmond’s 4×100 relay team of Riley Austin, Hunter, Daenisha Austin, and Lindsey Griffin also won a sectional title. Camile Golay was second in the pole vault, while VanMiddlesworth (400) and Austin (long jump) added third-place finishes. Austin, a junior, won the NCC title in the long jump, while also qualifying for the indoor state meet.
Richmond’s track team will return to action in 2018 as the indoor season opens.
