Here’s the No. 7 story of the year for the Red Devils: Devils Double Up on Sectional Titles
At the beginning of the 2016 soccer season, Richmond coach Matt Haynes was left asking the question “Who are we?”
By the end, his team and the girls soccer program could answer the same way: sectional champions.
Richmond’s boys earned their 16th sectional title in program history with a 1-0 win against Rushville, while the girls earned sectional No. 8, their first since 2007, with a 1-0 win over New Castle at Lyboult Field.
The teams took different paths to the titles.
Richmond’s girls program excelled all season and finally got past rival New Castle at home in the sectional championship match.
“New Castle has had our number the past six seasons,” Richmond coach Eric Wilson said following the championship match to the media. “We knew it would be a battle for 80 minutes, and we managed to get a goal to win it.”
It was freshman Nakala Bennett who scored the match’s lone goal. Bennett is part of a strong nucleus of players who will return in 2017 and look to earn another sectional title.
For the Red Devil boys, the team came together as a cohesive defensive unit by the end of the season and earned a 2-1 win against Franklin County in the sectional semifinals before knocking off Rushville for the title. Matt Murray scored the game winner against Rushville, while Sid Sagna played well as keeper to earn the shutout.
“It was a surreal feeling,” Haynes told the Pal-Item. “At the beginning of the season, we set out to win the sectional and that was a goal of ours.”
