Here’s the No. 6 story of the year for the Red Devils: Famed Coach Retires
The future will ultimately determine whether or not Ron Murphy is a hall-of-fame coach, but it can be said definitively that he was one of a kind at Richmond High School.
The longtime golf coach stepped away from the game following another successful season filled with his golfers having individual and team success.
The Red Devils claimed the sectional title for a state-best 35th time as sophomore Jake Miller shot a 71 and senior Jarrett Focht was second overall with a 77 at The Players Club in Yorktown.
Miller, an Ohio State commit, capped his sophomore season with another trip to the State Finals and all-state honors. Focht, who will play golf at Marian, also earned all-state honors during his senior year.
The duo represented everything that Murphy’s career has at Richmond: great talent achieving greater results.
Murphy was named NCC Coach of the Year nine times, Ball State’s coach of the year four times, and the state’s coach of the year on two occasions. He also coached the girls program retiring from that position following the 2015 season.
Most notably, Murphy coached the Red Devils boys to the 2003 state championship. That group was named the greatest golf state champion ever recently by the Indianapolis Star.
