The Red Devil cross country team kicked off their season Saturday, August 19th with their only home meet at IU East.
The Devils hosted 14 teams for the first competition of the season. Both teams from Southport walked away with trophies at the end of the meet. Richmond girls finished 9th out of 14 and the boys finished 10th out of 14.
Top finishers from the Red Devils included senior Julian Reeves with a time of 18:44 and Vanya Sanchez and Brendy Mendoza-Gaytan on each other’s heels with times of 26:53 and 27:02, respectively.
“For the first time actually racing in a year I’m still getting faster, which is good,” said Reeves. “Once I get speed work under my belt for the year, the sky is the limit. That goes for everyone.”
The girls cross country team was missing two of their top runners. “It was a difficult race, but it shows that we still have a lot of room to improve before Sectionals,” said senior Taylor Burden.
The girls finished 9th with 252 points while the boys were 10th with 300.
“The meet ran the most smoothly it has in my four years with Richmond cross country,” said assistant coach Hunter Lambright. “We host and get a baseline for the first meet, and the rest of the season is spent zeroing in on the things we noticed today. I’m excited to see how much better these athletes will get as the season goes on.”
The Red Devil runners return to action this Saturday, August 26 at Rushville High School at 9 AM.
