Game Recap

The rebuilding process continues for the young Red Devils team, as they fell to Arsenal Tech 45-7. The Red Devils are being bit by the injury bug and had 20 players on the injured reserve list. Three starting Linebackers did not suit up for the game, as well as star safety Ron “Bubba” Sanders. The missing presence of Brice Brown and Caleb Ellis anchoring the middle of the defense was definitely felt as the Titans had a touchdown run of 82 yards on their first offensive play of the game. The Titans run game never looked back and really wore down the young linebackers, who got their first start of the season because of the injury situation. The Devils need to get some of their key players healthy very soon to compete in the tough NCC. One bright spot for the Devils defense was the continued sold play of Sophomore NT Jackson Haynes. Also, Junior Mikey Vance was making plays all over the field, leading the team in tackles.

The offense is still a work in progress as the Red Devils have many first year starters on on that side of the ball. The offense was able to move the ball efficiently, but ultimately did not score in the game. Wyatt Byrd had another solid performance running the ball for the Red Devils. Wide Receivers Tremell Carpenter, and Jerrell Deloney both had solid games and showed that they can be dynamic when they have the ball in their hands. Quarterback Brandon Curtis is still trying to find his rhythm leading the Richmond offense, but is getting better each week. Kody Reece contiued to impress, and showed that despite his size, he belongs on the field. Freshman quarterback Zach Hill took snaps during the fourth quarter and looked impressive. The future of the Red Devils looked bright with Hill at QB. He looked poised and has an impressive arm and size. Despite the offense having many bright spots, not scoring any points hurt the Devils chances to be competitive. The offense is going to have to get a lot better very soon for the Red Devils to be competitive in the NCC, but they are going to have to do it without their most consistent WR Oshay Henderson who went down with a knee injury in the 2nd quarter.

Coach Abe and his staff have their work cut out for them this season. The injury bug has dealt a major blow at multiple key positions to an already young and inexperienced Red Devils team. The size advantage went to Arsenal Tech who had multiple players that looked like they utilized the weight room in the off season, while the Devils look very underdeveloped. Games are won and lost in the off season, and the lack of a solid off season strength and conditioning program is evident this year for the Red Devils.

This week the Red Devils will be traveling to Muncie Central, to face a tough Bearcats team. The Bearcats have lost their first three games and will be hungry for a win. The Red Devils will have to greatly improve this week to give themselves a chance to compete with another tough NCC foe.
