Defending sectional champion Mt. Vernon rallied from a double digit first half deficit to knock off Richmond 49-44 at Tiernan Center on Friday.
The Marauders advanced to Saturday’s final to face New Palestine, who knocked off Connersville in Friday’s other semifinal and set up a rematch of 2018’s sectional championship game.
Mt. Vernon fell behind early and trailed at the break, but used a spurt early in the fourth quarter to gain control of the game. Richmond fought valiantly, but couldn’t overcome Mt. Vernon’s 14-point advantage at the free throw line.
Ball State-bound and Indiana All-Star candidate Lucas Kroft knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points. Senior Jordan Frye chipped in nine points, while sophomore Andrew Kroft added 8 points for the Devils.
Richmond finished 12-14, its most wins since the 2014-15 season.
