RICHMOND, March 7, 2019 –

Tony Sonsini will be the next head coach of Richmond Red Devil Football pending board approval. Sonsini, a 1998 RHS graduate, has been teaching at Richmond High School for 15 years, and was an assistant football coach for 8 years at RHS.
In 2011, Sonsini took over as the head coach at National Trail where the team had only 4 winning seasons since its inception in 1968, had never made the playoffs, and was 2-59 the previous 6 seasons-including riding a 22 game losing streak into Sonsini’s arrival. In 2012, the team had its first winning season in 15 years finishing with a 6-4 record and Sonsini being named the Palladium-Item’s Coach of the Year. In 2013, the team went 8-3 and qualified for the first playoff appearance in school history. After leaving National Trail following the 2014 season to help more at home with his young family, Sonsini was co-offensive coordinator for 2 seasons at Earlham College before then helping the staff as a volunteer last season.
Sonsini holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Secondary Education from Franklin College, where he played both baseball and football. He also has a Master’s of Arts degree in Education from Earlham College. Sonsini holds licenses in Coaching, Health and Safety, and Physical Education.
Coach Sonsini lives in Richmond with his wife, Dawn (RHS Class of 2000) and their three daughters, Madison (11), Ashtyn (7), and Kennedy(3).
“We’re excited about the energy and enthusiasm Coach Sonsini brings to RHS Football and are looking forward to the many outstanding contributions he and his coaching staff will make,” said RHS Athletic Director Larry Cochren. “We’re very fortunate to have Coach Sonsini leading our program on the field, in the classroom, and in the city of Richmond.”
Coach Sonsini was introduced to the team this morning. He discussed expectations, off season conditioning, and goals for the upcoming season. Information regarding off season programs will be posted at in the future.
