The Red Devils track team made the long journey to Lafayette Jefferson High School for this year’s NCC tournament.
“The girls team had some great performances tonight. Both teams saw PRs and are giving us a good idea of how Sectional will unfold. We have individuals with big goals and I’m excited as I watch them develop into strong athletes heading into Sectional,” said coach, Britni Gettinger.
The Lady Red Devils finished 8th in this year’s NCC. Junior Nakala Bennett ran hard and took home 6th place in the 100 meter dash and 8th in the 400 meter dash. Senior Payton VanMiddlesworth ran down her competitors one by one and ended up 5th in the 1600 meter run and 4th in the 3200 meter run. Freshman Jayci Allen used her long legs to get 8th place in the high jump. The relay teams are always fun to watch. The 4×100 relay team of Loni Eubanks, Aaliyah Porfidio-Brown, Khalidah Hickson, and Tamia Hampton placed 6th while the 4×400 team of Eubanks, Katelyn Evans, Hickson, and VanMiddlesworth earned 7th place.
The flip side saw the boys team struggle as a whole and finish in 10th. Individual highlights included junior Josh Jones racing his way to 5th place in the 1600 meter run. Senior Raynor Eddy set a huge PR by heaving his disc into 6th place, while junior Koream Jett soared into 8th place in long jump.
The Devils get some much needed recovery time until Sectional. Sectional will be held at Connersville High School- the girls compete Tuesday May 14th and the boys compete Thursday May 16th.
You can check out the future Red Devils as the IS team returns to action at Lyboult Field on Monday.
