Red Devils News · Red Devils Baseball Win and Advance

The Richmond Red Devils baseball team took on the host Pendleton Heights Arabians Saturday morning in the second round of the IHSAA Sectional Tournament. Richmond advanced to the second round by defeating the Muncie Central Bearcats by a score of 10-1 Wednesday evening in the opening game of 4A’s Sectional #9. The Arabians received the bye in the seven-team sectional field.

Senior Brice Brown took to the mound for the Red Devils with his 4-3 overall record on the year. Through four pitches, Brown induced two ground outs. Then Pendleton Heights’ Rene Casas reached base on a Red Devil error on the infield. Cole Miller singled to right field advancing Casas to third base. Miller went to second on the throw in to the infield. Ben Richards then hit a single to center field scoring both runs and giving the Arabians an early 2-0 lead.

Senior left fielder Josiah Sizemore walked to lead off the bottom of the first for Richmond. He then advanced to second base after encouraging an errant pickoff throw from the pitcher. Senior first baseman Phillip Hobbs smashed a deep fly ball to center field allowing Sizemore to tag up and take third base. Sizemore then scored on a sacrifice fly hit to right field by junior shortstop Gabe Crowe. At the end of the first inning, Pendleton Heights led 2-1.

Brown went back to the hill in the top of the second and collected two strikeouts while giving up a leadoff double to Kamden Earley and singles to Wyatt Douglas and Miller. The Arabians scrapped out three additional runs thanks in part to a second Red Devil error. Things looked bleak heading into the bottom of the second inning with Pendleton Heights leading 5-1.

The coaching staff of the Red Devils pulled the players together and with the help of the senior team members regrouped to show some patience and back to the game plan. With one out, Brown singled to deep shortstop. Senior third baseman Mikey Vance reached by getting hit by an inside pitch. Sophomore designated hitter Colton Fox and junior centerfielder George Dickman had quality at-bats leading to back-to-back walks providing Richmond with its second run of the game. Sizemore singled to center field scoring Vance while reloading the bases. Crowe followed with another walk scoring Fox. With senior rightfielder Mason Brewer at the plate, Dickman was able to score on a wild pitch that reached the backstop. Sizemore and Crowe advanced to second and third bases on the same pitch, respectively. With the score tied 5-5, Pendleton Heights had seen enough and went to their bullpen. Luke Hargrave came in to relieve the Arabians #1-pitcher Walker Stull. Hargrave’s first pitch got away allowing Sizemore to score and give the Red Devils a 6-5 lead. Brewer drew a walk and then stole second to put runners at second and third base. Freshman catcher Nick Turner drove a high-flying double off the right center field fence scoring two more to give the Red Devils an 8-5 lead after two innings.

The Arabians went scoreless in the top of the third. Brown was hit by a pitch and then sacrificed to second by Vance followed by a walk to Fox. Dickman drove in Richmond’s ninth run and advanced Fox to third with a single to right field. Then, with two outs, Hobbs hit a three-run home run over the center field fence to extend Richmond’s lead to 12-5 through three innings of play.

In the top of the fourth, Wyatt Douglas hit a one-out triple for Pendleton Heights but was left stranded as Brown struck out the next two batters. In the bottom half of the inning, Turner hit a one-out single followed by an RBI double by Brown and a run-scoring single by Fox to give the Red Devils a 14-5 lead through four innings.

Richards singled to lead off the top of the fifth for the Arabians. Earley followed with an RBI- triple to right field scoring Pendleton Heights’ sixth run. Earley was thrown out at the plate trying to score himself as Brewer hit junior second baseman Jarred Flood with a perfect relay  on to Vance at third when the ball kicked off of Mikey’s glove scurrying away about ten feet. Vance then fired a perfect strike to Turner at the plate thwarting the last serious offensive attack by the Arabians. The Red Devils went down in order in the bottom of the fifth.

Douglas hit a lone single in the top of the sixth for the hosts. Brown doubled and singles were hit by Vance, Dickman, and Sizemore to put two more runs on the board for the Red Devils securing a 16-6 second round sectional win.

In the second game of the day, Greenfield-Central was leading Anderson by a score of 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth-inning when rains came and delayed the completion of the game Saturday. The game will pick up from where it was halted Monday at 1pm at Pendleton Heights High School. The winner will take on Richmond in the sectional championship at 3:30pm.
