Test Tigers Vanquish Randolph Southern Rebels
After a year of being Idol (Billy), the Randolph Southern volleyball team returned to the friendly confines of Test Fieldhouse with a Rebel Yell. That confident attitude was short lived as the Rebels were quickly and soundly defeated and they departed with nary a whimper.
In the season home opener for the 8th grade Tigers of Test, the rebellious Rebels hoped to disappoint the raucous opening night fandom of Test. That thought was quickly erased as the elder 8th grade Tigers came roaring out of their cage. With aggressive serving by Ariana Santos, the Cats quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Two servers later, and the rout was on. Aubree Falcone stepped up to the line and delivered ball after ball to the shell shocked Rebels. A timeout at 15-4 did nothing to squelch the Test effort. Before Falcone was through, the Tigers had pushed the lead from 8-4 all the way to 21-4. There was little the Southerners could do to slow the Tiger onslaught. After a sideout, it was Emily Moran’s turn at the line. Three serves later and the fatal blow had been struck with the Tigers prevailing 25-5. Dominant serving, with only two errors, proved to be the decisive difference in the first game.
Game two was a different story. It was a struggle, a struggle to do the little things that had delivered the first game victory. Points were scored one at a time with serving errors ending each opportunity to pressure the Rebels. A four point run by the Rebels generated an 8-4 lead for Randolph Southern. Both teams battled back and forth until Rylee Seal evened the score at 10-10. Both teams continued to grind for points, only scoring one or two until the Rebels jumped on top 17-13. The Tigers responded with a run of their own. Natalee Piatt began playing with more confidence and ran off five consecutive serves putting the felines up 19-17. Capitalizing on this momentum, Macy Potter then delivered the final three serves of the match. A final score of 25-20 in game two produced the Tigers first win of the 2019 campaign.
When asked about the first match of the year, Coach Morken was very happy to get the first win of the season. “The match went much like I expected. Randolph Southern is young and has a first year coaching staff. Knowing this, I felt like our returning experience could earn us the victory.” When asked about game two he stated, “Our confidence, from game one, seemed to slip as players began making errors in the second game. We just needed to settle down and play fundamental volleyball. At the end, we finished the game on our terms.”
The next matchup for the Tigers will be on Wednesday, September 4th at 5:30. The game will be played in the tiger cage at Test. Come out and support your Test Tigers. They’rrrre GREAT!
