Jay County broke a 42-all tie in the closing moments with a pair of free throws on its way to a 47-44 non-conference win on Saturday night in Portland.
The Patriots (2-0) scored their final five points from the line and withstood a frantic final seconds that ended with Richmond’s tying 3-point attempt falling short.
It was the season opener for the Red Devils (0-1), who will be at home in Tiernan Center for a pair of non-conference games next weekend.
Junior Andrew Kroft led Richmond with 18 points and four rebounds, while Tytan Newton added 10 points and Jordan Stolle chipped in six points. Koream Jett led the Devils with three assists and four steals.
Richmond’s JV squad lost 57-46 in overtime with Levon Jordan pacing the Devils with 14 points, while Dorian Hill added nine.
Richmond’s freshman team won in the coaching debut for RHS alum Bryce Austin. The Devils knocked off Jay County 44-35 behind Nick Whlaen’s 11 points. Drew VanVleet and Kenny Cunningham chipped in eight points apiece.
