The Richmond Red Devils take on Indianapolis Arsenal Tech Friday night in NCC action at the Tiernan Center. At 6:00 the girls Varsity will play in the Tiernan Center while the boys JV plays in the auxiliary gym. At 7:30 the girls JV will play in the auxiliary gym while the boys Varsity plays in the Tiernan Center.
This is a special night as the Red Devils will be hosting their third annual Silent Night.
What is Silent Night? Click here to watch the ESPN feature on Taylor University’s Silent Night.
From the Indy Star, “Silent Night started in the late 1980s with then-Taylor (Taylor University, Upland, IN) president Jay Kesler, who invited students to his campus residence for cookies and a reading of The Christmas Story. In 1988 he showed up to the pre-exams Friday game in pajamas. In 1989 Taylor students showed up in pajamas too. In 1997 they watched in silence until Taylor scored its 10th point, then erupted. That’s the history. And the mystery.”
How can you participate? Fans are encouraged to wear costumes (school rules still apply). From the pregame until the opening tip of the Varsity contest, it is business as usual. However, from the opening tip until the Red Devils score their 10th point, we want the TC to be silent. That’s right- no announcing, no cheering, no band, no talking…pure silence.
Then, when the Red Devils score their 10th point…GET LOUD!!! (Note- there will not be a timeout and there will be no rushing of the court.)
From the 10th point on we are back to business as usual.
RHS students get free admission with their ID compliments of Mr. Cook.
We hope to see you this Friday at the Tiernan Center for Silent Night during our NCC doubleheader.
