Richmond had won 12 straight regular season games dating back to last year.
Marion (1-0, 1-0 in North Central Conference) ended that streak with a 78-60 win against the Red Devils (1-1) Friday night in the NCC opener at Tiernan Center.
Richmond’s last regular season loss was on January 10, 2020.
Jalen Blackmon had 17 of his game-high 38 points in the first quarter as Marion converted Richmond turnovers to points. The Red Devils settled down in the final three quarters, but rebounding and turnovers kept Richmond from getting closer than nine in the second half.
Three Richmond players scored in double figures, topped by Stephen Douglas’s 18 points. Tylan Harris made three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points, while Chase Newtown chipped in 11 points. Phoenix Michaels had nine points off the bench for the Red Devils.
Richmond’s junior varsity team improved to 2-0 with a 54-47 win in the night’s opener. Ryder Cate had 16 points to lead the Devils, while Preston Hunter (13) and Kenny Cunningham (10) were also in double figures for Richmond.
The Red Devils return to action on Saturday in a non-conference game at New Palestine. The junior varsity game tips at 6 p.m.
