Saturday night’s North Central Conference battle at Tiernan Center was the 97th game in a 95-year rivalry between Logansport and Richmond.
Much like days gone by, points were at a premium and defense was the difference for the Devils (7-8) in a 45-43 win against the Berries (11-8).
After limiting Logansport to just two points in the game’s final four minutes, Richmond needed one last stop to seal the win. They got it as Darion Smith blocked a shot attempt at the rim as the buzzer sounded.
The win marked Richmond’s third straight and capped a weekend sweep of two conference opponents.
Yet despite leading most of the way, Richmond found itself trailing with 3:52 to go as Logan took its first lead of the second half on a driving layup. But junior Stephan Douglas answered making his fourth 3-pointer of the game to push Richmond ahead for good. Douglas finished with a team-high 17 points, while adding six rebounds.
Smith chipped in 10 points, two assists and the key blocked shot. Ty Harris was also in double figures with 13 points.
Douglas had 12 of his 17 in the first half and jump started a run with a 3-pointer that saw Richmond push to a seven-point lead late in the first half.
Tim Arnold tied Douglas for team-high honors with six rebounds, while Chase Newton had four assists and four deflections. Trenton James added two points, a steal and a rebound.
Richmond returns to action on Friday when they close out NCC play for 2020-21 with a home game against Lafayette Jeff.
