Richmond Track Splits Season Opener against Muncie and Anderson
The Red Devil track team fell to Muncie but defeated Anderson for both the boys and girls teams on Wednesday night in the season opener.
The night opened with a bang as the 3200 meter relay team of Vanya Sanchez-Castillo, Lydia Casiano, Lily Schamel, and Claire Reising came from behind to take first place with a time of 11:15 against Muncie’s relay team.
Tu’Shawn Farris kept the points coming in sprints with a 14.00 second-place finish in the 100 meter dash. The 4×100 meter relay team of Tamia Hampton, Khalidah Hickson, Tu’Shawn Farris, and Aaliyah Porfidio-Brown fell to Muncie with a time of 55.22 seconds, but still earned second-place honors. Lucia Ferrer Benito added to the point total with a third-place 400 meter dash. Sprints wrapped up their scores for the night with second- and third-place finishes in the 200 meter dash from Hampton and Lizzy Graham.
The distance team continued to bring the heat with third- and fourth-place finishes in the 1600 meter run from Sanchez-Castillo and Bess Scheiben. Casiano and Schamel returned in the 800 meter run with second- and fourth-place finishes at 2:52 and 2:57 respectively. Alex Parker put more points on the board with a second-place finish in the 3200 meter run.
The throwers also added to the team score with second and third in the shot put from Molly O’Brien and Sophia Laughlin-Foster with throws of 30’6” and 30’2”, respectively. O’Brien took first in the discus with a best throw of 85’11”. She was joined by Grace Cartee in third place with a throw of 79’10.5”.
In the jumps, Jayci Allen tied for a first-place finish in the high jump with a best jump of 5’0”. She was joined by Mary Zaleski in third with a best jump of 4’10”. In the long jump, Farris scored with a third-place 13’9” jump, followed by Iyana Waddell with a 12’4” best jump. Richmond pole vaulters swept first and second with a 7’0” jump from Aubrey Uhte and a 6’6” jump from Katelyn Evans.
The girls finished with a total score of 51 points over Anderson’s 23, but were bested by a tough Muncie team scoring 75 points total.
Both Red Devils track teams return to action next week in Muncie for a rematch against both Muncie and Anderson on Wednesday, April 14th.
