Saturday night the Red Devils faced the Mavericks in what proved to be a thriller for a ball game. The Red Devils jumped out to an early lead going up 11-5 on the Mavericks sparked by some sharp shooting by junior guard Kenzie Wert. Despite being down two starters, Richmond’s Jayci Allen handled the point guard position well, keeping Richmond ahead going into the locker room at half time. Third quarter proved to be no different for Richmond’s small roster. They went up 11 on the Mavericks heading into the final stretch. McCutcheon however wasn’t ready to give up. They threw a full court press at the Red Devils taking advantage of a short bench and players having to take on different roles. As the Mavericks closed in on the gap, the Red Devils were charged with a technical foul. Although the momentum shifted and now was in McCutcheon’s favor with a small lead, the Richmond girls kept rallying to keep the score close. Sophomore Jakaia Lotz made a couple of big plays at the end of the game to keep the score close, but unfortunately the Red Devils would eventually fall to the Mavericks 39-40. Three Red Devils found the scoring column in the matchup. Jakaia Lotz with 18, Kenzie Wert with 17, and Abby Brewer with 4. The Red Devils are back in action at Connersville on Tuesday.
The JV struggled on Saturday against the Mavericks. The young squad found it hard to score and were only able to put up 18 to the Mavericks 41. Paighton Morken led the way with 11 points. They too are back in action on Tuesday against the Connersville Spartans. JV game tips at 6PM.
