Five wins in a row have now elevated the Richmond girls volleyball team to the .500 mark (9-9). The Red Devils won at Anderson Thursday 25-21, 25-14, 25-20 while the junior varsity finished on top 25-17, 25-10.

The first set was tied 6-6 when senior Molly Morken served a flurry of aces. It was also tied at 9, 10, 11, 15, 20 and 21. At this point Laurelai DePew served two points to make it 23-21 and back to back kills by Ashley Clark and Rayonna Rogers finished it off.

Set two was all Richmond as Lauren Uhte and Kennedy McKee combined to serve the Red Devils to an 11-1 lead. At that point it was essentially over.

Richmond took an 8-4 lead in set three but Anderson (1-12) kept battling. A pair of Rogers kills helped but the Indians crept to within 18-16. A DePew kill made it 21-18, a Morken kill 22-19 and a McKee kill 23-20. The final two volleys went to the Devils.

Richmond next will compete in the Muncie Central Invitational on Saturday, the first two matches against the Bearcats and East Central.

“We came in tonight knowing what we wanted to do and I think you saw that in the second set. The score reflects that,” coach Russ Uhte said. “The first set we came out a little overconfident but I knew what we had. I trusted the girls we had on the court and I wanted (some of the reserves) to get some playing time.”

Richmond will be looking for revenge against Muncie Central Saturday after the Bearcats beat the Devils in five sets earlier in the season.

“Saturday my girls are ready. We are absolutely ready,” Uhte said of facing Muncie again. “We want Muncie Central bad. We saw East Central in the preseason so we know what to expect there. We’re looking for wins in pool play and hopefully we’ll get through that and face some really good competition in the championship round.”
