Over the years Union County has been a real thorn in Richmond’s side when it comes to girls volleyball. Nothing has changed.

In a less than inspiring performance, the Red Devils lost to the Patriots in straight sets Tuesday at Liberty, 12-25, 20-25, 20-25, while the junior varsity also went down in defeat 18-25, 24-25. Union County is now 7-1, Richmond 4-9.

Richmond highlights were hard to come by in this one. Early in set one, Ashley Clark had two kills and a service ace and Laurelai DePew a pair of kills a bit later. That was pretty much it.

Set two was much better volleyball, except for the start. DePew (she had a team high eight kills) had an early block but Richmond still found itself down 9-2 and 13-3. Another DePew kill got the Devils rolling. With Union County leading 17-8, Richmond went on an impressive spurt. The Devils scored nine straight points to catch up at 17-all. Two DePew kills, a Rayonna Rogers kill, a corner shot by Molly Morken and terrific serving by Kennedy McKee were reasons for the streak.

Kills by Rogers, DePew and Morken came later but Union County garnered eight of the last 11 points to pull it out.

Richmond led 3-1 to open set three before UC took a 12-7 advantage. Two straight DePew kills and one by Ella Wilson tied the score at 12-12. A Morken kill came later but the Devils just couldn’t sustain anything.

“It was actually almost 12 rotations before we were able to put two points together in a row,” said Richmond coach Russ Uhte. “We have to regroup now. We just can’t expect to play like that and get different results. We have to be very specific on how we’re scoring and when we’re scoring. We have to come out quicker and be ready to fight.”

The Red Devils return to action on Tuesday of next week at Lincoln of Cambridge City.
