A brutal schedule that saw the young Red Devils defense face 5 ranked opponents in their first 9 games, finally paid dividends as the Devils (4-5-1 coming into the game) upset Marion (5-2-1) to take control of the NCC East. The Devils can clinch the top seed going into the conference tournament with a win at Anderson on September 24th.
The game had many storylines coming in as the Devils had won 2 of their last 7, and hadn’t won in Marion in close to 20 years. The game featured the NCC’s top 2 scorers facing off with Nakala Bennett (18) and Taylor Kitts (17) facing off.
Bennett lead the Devils with 3 goals (9 goals in last 3 games vs Marion), while Riley Wetzel controlled the middle of the field and added a goal. The Devils took control of the game early getting out to a 3-0 lead. The defense led by Hannah Trotter, Madeline Stults, and Aaiyah Porfidio-Brown shut Kitts down and controlled the NCC’s leading offense throughout the game.
The Devils play Franklin County at home, on Senior Night Thursday, September 19th.
