Tuesday night the Red Devils opened sectional play in the Tiernan Center against the Anderson Lady Indians. In an anticipated close game, the two teams did not disappoint.
After several quick attempts from both teams, the Red Devils finally broke the score open on a Jakaia Lotz field goal. The score was nine all to end the first quarter. During the second quarter, Tyra Ford and the Indians had an answer for the Red Devils gathering a lead by two points going into the locker room. Ford had 14 of the Indian’s 19 points first half points.
Despite their difficulties to score the ball, the Red Devils continued to battle in the second half turning up defensive efforts in-order-to stay within a few points of the Indians. Richmond obtained the lead, going up one point before entering the final seven minutes of play 25-24.
However, once again, no matter how much Richmond tried to keep Ford from scoring, she was still able to put up another 11 in the second half collecting over half of Anderson’s points. Alayha Allen and Ajah Orr scored all but two of Richmonds second half points to keep the Red Devils within one possession of Indians.
Down three, coming into the last 15 seconds, the Red Devils took a time out to draw up an inbounds play under their basket. Anderson would tighten up the defense forcing Richmond to put up a contested three-point shot that would fall short along with their hopes of advancing to the second round of sectional.
The Red Devils would finish their season 12-12, a huge improvement from last year’s 5-19 record. Junior Alayha Allen led Red Devil scoring with 14 while Ajah Orr chipped in seven.
Richmond graduates two seniors Molly Morken and Nakala Bennett. They will return four of their five starters next year and expect to have another successful season.
